Ask These Questions Before Replacing Your System

1. What type of heating and cooling system is best for my home?

A lot has changed in the HVAC industry over the past 10-15 years. New technologies have emerged and that could mean there’s a more efficient way to heat or cool your home. A reliable HVAC company will send over an expert who can evaluate your home (and household) needs, and recommend a system that works for you.

2. Can anything be reused?

If you’re in the position of replacing your entire HVAC system, it’s always good to ask your contractor whether anything can be salvaged. In some circumstances, your ductwork may only require some modification, not replacement, which can cut the project expense significantly. There may be other elements that can be reused and it never hurts to check.

3. What HVAC accessories do you recommend?

It’s also a good idea to ask your provider about what new HVAC models or components are on the market and which can be of use to you. It’s entirely possible that since you installed your system, technology has improved quite a bit and a new component may increase efficiency, reduce costs, or keep your home more comfortable. Here’s a list of our favorite HVAC accessories.

Even if these new components or models may cost a bit more, they could be saving you a lot on your utility bills. You should ask your HVAC provider how fast these components usually pay for themselves regarding efficiency and lower energy bills.

4. Are there any rebates or tax credits available to help offset the cost of a new system?

Aside from lower heating and cooling costs, a new HVAC system can also bring a host of tax breaks, utility or manufacturer rebates, or other unique benefits from both the state and the federal government. You should ask your HVAC provider whether they will submit these rebates, as well as any warranty information and required paperwork on your behalf. If not, ask them about these issues, as well as what rebate programs you are eligible for.

5. How often should I have my new system serviced to ensure optimal performance?

It’s a good decision to choose an HVAC company that installs new systems and also provides scheduled maintenance. You should get your system looked at 1-2x’s per year in order to maintain peak performance. By selecting a company that does both, you’re building a relationship with a local provider who understands the ins-and-outs of your system.

6. How long will the job take?

Spring and fall are the best times to do any significant HVAC repairs or replacements. It’s usually this time of year when temperatures are the mildest so that you don’t have to rely on your HVAC system as much. That said, these systems have a knack of breaking when you least expect them, and you need to get them fixed as soon as possible.

On a similar note, you should also inquire as to when the project will start. Depending on the season and the HVAC contractor’s availability, you may be put on a waiting list.

7. Can you provide me with an estimate for a new system installation?

Any reputable HVAC provider will provide you with a written quote and allow you time to review the details of the agreement. If you have any questions, give them a call to ask. Red flags include companies that aren’t open to discussing the quote with you or companies that pressure you to make a purchase before you have time to review everything.

Conclusion

Build a relationship with your local HVAC company so that you feel comfortable and confident calling them when you need help. Start by interviewing a few companies and then request an estimate from your favorite options. The above questions are a great way to evaluate whether they are someone you would enjoy doing business with.
