How Do Ductless Systems Work?

Ductless systems are sleek and stylish, which makes many people wonder how they work. Without ducts, can a system truly heat and cool a home? The answer is yes. Ductless systems have come a long way and we are confident in our preferred manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric. They offer a wide range of options and products that can be used to create optimal comfort for our customers. Here’s how their systems work.

The Components of a Ductless System

There are three main components to a ductless system: the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, and the copper lines  that connect them. Together, they form a structure that creates both heat and cold air (using refrigerant) depending on the season.

Indoor Unit

The indoor unit is usually installed on a wall, however, Mitsubishi Electric offers a variety of other options that might be better for your home. Other styles include ceiling or floor-mounted. A unit is installed in each room or area, according to the recommendation of your Frederick Air Home Comfort Specialist. Each unit has its own thermostat, which means that each space can be set at the temperature that’s right for the individual.

Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit is connected to the indoor unit by two refrigerant lines. These lines transfer heat or cool based on your preferences. They work year-round, even in sub-zero temperatures to generate the heat you need to be comfortable. A single outdoor unit can control up to 8 indoor units, though we usually recommend around 5 per unit. In the summer, heat from your home is absorbed by the indoor unit and transferred to the outdoor unit. The process is reversed in the winter and the system extracts heat from the outdoor air, transferring it to inside your home.

Why Choose a Ductless System?

Ductless systems use up to 40% less energy than conventional systems. They also provide air filtration, which results in superior indoor air quality. Read more about the advantages of a ductless system.

Conclusion

The way ductless systems work is actually pretty simple. There is a unit on the outside of the home and a unit inside the property that are connected by electric wires and two tubes. They work together to extract heat and transfer it depending on the season.
