Do you know which type of refrigerant is in your HVAC system?
Most people don’t, and this isn’t a problem. However, important changes are taking place in the refrigerant world that consumers like you need to know about. Your system’s current refrigerant is likely R-410A, but did you know it’s being phased out due to environmental concerns? Don’t panic! Your system is still good to go for the remainder of its lifespan.
To help you navigate this transition process, here’s a closer look at the world’s refrigerant update and how it impacts your HVAC services.
Why Are Refrigerants Changing in 2025?
For years, everyone thought the refrigerant R-410A was an eco-friendly alternative to Freon and R-22. Unfortunately, scientists discovered that R-410A actually has a higher global warming potential (GWP) than R-22, which has been outlawed in the U.S. since 2010. In a global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow climate change, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the international Kigali Amendment are currently phasing out R-410A.
What Are the New Refrigerants Being Introduced?
The latest and greatest eco-friendly refrigerants are R-454B and R-32. R-32 is a single-component refrigerant that is already safely in use in over 160 million units in the U.S. It’s also currently the most popular replacement for R-410A and is in use in over 100 countries across the globe. R-32 is the main ingredient of R-454B, a newer refrigerant blend.
While both refrigerants are safe and better for the environment than R-410A, many HVAC manufacturers are planning to use R-454B for HVACs in 2025 and beyond due to its significantly lower global warming potential (75% less than R-410A). Also, compared to R-32, R-454B is better for the environment, more energy-efficient, and higher performing.
How Will These Changes Impact Current HVAC Unit Owners?
Under the EPA’s American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020, the official phase-out process for R-410A will begin in 2025 — but don’t panic! If your current system has R-410A, you’ll still be able to operate and run your unit until the end of its lifespan.
The only catch for consumers is that R-410A production will be reduced over time. As supply becomes more limited, R-410A pricing could rise. To help you navigate this confusing transition process, Frederick Air is here to help you plan for future repairs, maintenance, and potential upgrades. Our goal is to help you get the most out of your HVAC system and find a solution that works with your budget for the long term.
When to Consider Replacing Your HVAC System
No one looks forward to replacing their HVAC system. But it may be time to consult with Frederick Air about eco-friendly upgrading options if:
- Your unit is old: If your HVAC is 10+ years old and nearing the end of its lifespan, it may be more cost-effective to upgrade to a new system with a newer, more eco-friendly refrigerant than continuing to pay for expensive repairs.
- Your system doesn’t do its job well: If you’re experiencing inconsistent heating, problems with short-cycling, or a heater that’s running nonstop, it’s time to have your system professionally evaluated.
- Your energy bills are way too high: A system with decreasing energy efficiency gets expensive fast. A new system with a more energy-efficient refrigerant will save you money on your energy bills while helping the environment.
