Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Frederick Air | October 29, 2018

The changing of the seasons is always a problem for homeowners. It is especially true for those who live in areas that experience some extremes in temperatures and precipitation when the seasons change. The start of fall is no exception.

It is an excellent opportunity for you to do a full home maintenance checklist that will ensure you are ready for both the new season and the one that will come after that. Nobody wants to be caught off guard when the cold seasons start, with either the roof leaking, your heater not working, or some other problem.

With that said, here is what you need to be looking for at the end of summer and start of fall.

Clean Your Gutters

With fall now upon us, leaves and other debris will become a problem. They'll fall on your roof, and with the season's increased rainfall, they will end up in your gutters - possibly even clogging them completely.

By removing them, you'll ensure that no ice dams or icicles will form during the winter. If you have the option, run a hose through the gutters so that you flush everything out. It will also help you determine whether there are any leaks - in which case you will need to patch them up or call a professional to help.

Inspect Your Roof

While you're up there, it's also a good idea to check the roof. Do more than just a quick glance. Look for any soft spots, brittle roof shingles, or any other such signs that your roof may need some work done. Walk around the house and examine the soffits - the part that overhangs between the walls of the house and the roofline. If you see any discoloration, it could be a sign of a leak. Likewise, go into your attic and look for any similar stains.

Inspect Your Heating Equipment

Nobody likes to be caught off guard with faulty heating equipment. So, before firing it up, you should call a professional to do a regular maintenance check. It will ensure that, come winter, you won't be without heat during a blizzard or something like that. The technician should also inspect the duck system for any leaks, blockage, or damage.

Check for Air Leaks or Damaged Insulation

Even the smallest gaps or cracks in or around your doors and windows, as well as your chimney, will result in heat escaping during the colder seasons. It, in turn, will result in larger heating bills and more fatigue for your heating system.

The same thing can be said about damaged or missing insulation. Go into your attic and crawl spaces and see whether everything is in proper order. If you notice any cold areas in your home, check the insulation in those areas, as well.  If this is something that may be out of your technical abilities, call a professional. The investment is well worth it.

Protect Your Deck

If you have a deck, remove any accumulated debris, scrub the boards thoroughly and apply a fresh coat of sealant. Look for any loose or raised boards and take any furniture, grill, or toys indoors for safe storage.

It's always better to be safe than sorry. These simple maintenance checks will make sure that you'll weather the colder months without any major or unexpected problems popping up. These simple checks will also save you from expensive heating bills or any major repairs. Contact Frederick Air today, so that you'll peacefully enjoy the fall and subsequent winter warm and cozy!
