4 Reasons Why Your HVAC Unit Isn't Working Properly

Frederick Air | July 31, 2017

The efficiency of your HVAC system is important for two reasons - the comfort of your home and the size of your energy bills. In order for your heating unit to deliver energy efficiency, all of its components must be fully operational. Here is a look at some of the issues that could cause your HVAC system to fail.

1. Bad Installation

When an HVAC system is improperly installed, it doesn't run efficiently. As a result, your energy bills are higher and the interior comfort of your home is compromised. This is why it's so important that you choose the right company to install your system. Here are some of the problems that can occur if your unit isn't installed correctly.

  • Short Circuit - if the electric voltage isn't correct, the unit won't run properly. A short circuit can occur.
  • Poor Results - if the unit is too small for the size of the home, it won't heat or cool the home efficiently or comfortably.
  • Uneven Heating and Cooling - when the air ducts haven't been installed properly, they could develop air leaks, resulting in uneven heating and cooling of the home.

2. The Filter Is Excessively Dirty

A dirty filter reduces the efficiency of your HVAC unit. As a result, your home doesn't feel evenly heated or cooled. The quality of the air within the home is negatively affected, possibly increasing allergy and asthma symptoms. Your energy bills might increase, and the likelihood of needing repairs increases.

3. The Thermostat Isn't Working

The HVAC's thermometer is critical to its performance. If it isn't working properly, it could reduce the number of years your unit is functional. Some of the signs that your thermostat needs replacement include:

  • The HVAC system runs continually.
  • The thermostat setting and the temperature in the home do not match.
  • The HVAC system doesn't respond when you raise or lower the temperature setting.

4. Failure to Have the HVAC System Cleaned and Serviced Regularly

Your HVAC system works hard, so it is important to schedule annual cleaning and maintenance services to keep it running properly. If you don't get the system cleaned, it has to work harder, which puts wear and tear on all of its components. Failing to arrange for annual maintenance increases the likelihood that a minor problem will develop into a serious one that breaks your HVAC unit.

Regular maintenance and cleaning should be scheduled at least once a year. If your HVAC system doesn't seem to be running well, you might want to schedule an appointment with us to find out what is wrong with it. Several issues could be causing it to run inefficiently. The sooner you discover what the problem is, the more likely it is that the repairs will be affordable.
