Warning Signs and the Dangers associated with Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide, or carbonous oxide, is an invisible gas that is extremely toxic to all oxygen-dependent life forms. Carbon monoxide threshold levels vary in humans, however, an exposure of one hundred p.p.m. (parts per millionth) or greater is considered harmful. Carbon monoxide regularly infiltrates our everyday lives through automobiles, machines driven by gasoline, free-standing heaters, stoves and burners. We simply and inadvertently draw this deadly, unscented gas in through our lungs.
A minor exposure to carbon monoxide can generate mild symptoms of bewilderment, lightheadedness, head ache, and giddiness along with an influenza feeling. Greater exposures, as well as exposures for a lengthier period of time, are particularly harmful to the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and results in hypoxia (an inadequate quantity of oxygen to reach the body’s cells). The toxicity produced by carbon monoxide is lethal. Continual exposure to low levels is just as dangerous in the long-term often generating melancholy, as well as loss of memory. Severe birth defects in the babies of women who were exposed to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide in the course of their pregnancy are a great threat as well.
The prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning is a major public health worry. Fortunately, the reduction associated with carbon monoxide poisoning is easily prevented by early discovery of carbonous oxide gas through the use of a carbon monoxide alarm (CO detector). This economical device is placed close to the floor, or near the ceiling, and developed to warn us of its discovery of carbon monoxide by alarm. On average, a CO detector has a life-span of seven years prior to replacing. However, that does not include an easy battery replacement. Carbon monoxide detectors are required in new construction.
