How to Stay Warm and Cozy at Home Without Cranking the Heat
Frederick Air | January 31, 2018
When the temperature starts to drop outside, you could crank the heat up but that could mean high energy bills. You could leave the thermostat where it is and keep your parka on all winter long. Or you can look for a midway point - a place that keeps you warm and comfortable without giving all your money to the energy company. Keeping your home warm and cozy when the weather is cold is not as difficult as you might think. Here are a few things you can do to keep comfortable no matter how cold it is outside.
Create Warm Little Nests
You do not need to warm up every square inch of your home - just the spaces where you spend your time. Instead of cranking up the heat and warming up all those empty rooms, turn the thermostat down and build some cozy little nests.
- If you love to curl up on the couch and watch movies at night, stack up comforters and extra blankets on the couch. When you are ready to watch, just wrap yourself up, grab the popcorn and enjoy a cozy night at home.
- You can pile those blankets and comforters on the bed as well, creating a cozy sleeping space for you and your partner. Some studies have shown that people sleep better in a cold room, so try leaving the heat off and diving into your warm bed.
Banish the Drafts
If your home is filled with drafts, all the heat in the world may not make it comfortable. Drafts can seep in under doors, around windows and even through exposed electrical outlets.
Take the time to check for drafts, holding your hand up to each window, feeling under doors and checking electrical outlets on exterior walls. Then plug up those drafts by weatherproofing windows, placing draft stoppers under doors, and insulating exterior outlets. You may be surprised at the difference these small and inexpensive upgrades can make.
Tune Up Your Furnace
If you cannot remember the last time you had your furnace inspected, chances are you are long overdue. An inefficient furnace can limit the amount of heat that makes it into your home, leaving you feeling cold even when the thermostat is cranked to the maximum. A dirty furnace also has to work harder, and that can mean higher heating costs all winter long.
Having a professional inspect and clean your furnace can improve its efficiency and keep it running smoothly all season long. The furnace technician will check the filters, clean the pipes and make sure your furnace is running as well as it should.
If you hate the cold, you are not alone. Stay cozy with these tips!
