5 Reasons Your HVAC Unit Operates Poorly

Frederick Air | November 29, 2017

If your HVAC unit operates poorly, your heating bills might be larger than they should be. Plus, your home probably isn't warm or comfortable either due to drafts, uneven heating, and obnoxious noises coming from your HVAC system. Here is a look at five of the most common reasons behind poor HVAC performance.

1. Needs Replacement

Unfortunately, most types of heating equipment eventually need replacement as normal wear-and-tear reduces the system's ability to perform efficiently. When this happens, the only option you have left is to replace your HVAC system. The life expectancy of any HVAC system is generally provided with the documentation accompanying the unit.

2. Poorly Maintained

It's important to schedule regular maintenance on your HVAC equipment for two reasons. Doing so ensures your system is operating properly, which helps to extend its longevity. Plus, an annual inspection of your system ensures it is safe to use, keeping your family safe from harm. If you fail to have your HVAC unit cleaned and inspected each year, necessary repairs go uncompleted. As a result, normal usage has a larger effect on the system, creating higher bills, poorer performance, and a shortened lifespan.

3. Broken Thermostat

If the thermostat's performance is erratic, the heating system isn't going to work properly. Typically, it's easy to see when the thermostat is faulty because your home will be drafty and cold. Plus, your energy bills will seem high in comparison to the comfort of your home's interior temperature. If your unit does not respond when you increase the temperature setting, you should probably have the thermostat replaced by a licensed technician.

4. Dirty Filters

A clogged filter reduces the efficiency of your HVAC unit, while also encouraging dirty air within your home. The frequency with which you need to replace your filters is determined by the make and model of your equipment since HVAC units typically utilize filters intended specifically for their design. A dirty filter increases your energy bills without providing the kind of warmth you are looking to achieve. If you aren't comfortable changing your filter on your own, a technician can do so for you during your annual HVAC inspection.

5. Faulty Installation

Although a faulty installation is a rare occurrence, it can happen. If your system does not appear to provide the interior warmth that you hoped to achieve, several reasons are possible. Perhaps the most common reason is that the HVAC unit simply isn't the correct size to heat your home. This scenario doesn't usually occur and is more likely to happen if you use an unlicensed professional to install your unit. Another problem that might occur involves using the wrong type of voltage for the connection.

If your HVAC unit isn't performing up to your standards, it might be time for an inspection, cleaning, and maintenance. While the best time to accomplish this task is prior to the months when you need your heating system, it is better to get it done as soon as you notice problems. If your HVAC unit isn't working well, schedule an inspection with a licensed professional today. If you have any questions regarding your HVAC system, give us a call at 301-663-0300.
