Inexpensive Ways to Insulate Your Home This Winter
Frederick Air | February 28, 2017
Heating bills can be costly during the late fall and throughout the winter. Fortunately, there are cheap modifications you can make around your home to help insulate your heat. These modifications keep heat from escaping from your windows, floors, and doors.
- Seal spaces in your doorways with a draft excluder
Doors that open to the outside might not be fitted to their frame properly, giving them gaps at the bottom of the doorway. Draft excluders can be purchased at most hardware and home goods stores. They're fairly inexpensive and can save you more than their value in heating costs.
- Caulk your windows
Although your windows were originally sealed to their frame, their seals erode over time. Simply caulk your windows to fortify their seals, limiting how much heat escapes from your home.
- Have your ceiling fans rotate clockwise
Warm air rises and cold air sinks. Letting your ceiling fans rotate clockwise on its lowest setting drives warm air down toward you. You won't have to turn the heat up as much since you're constantly being blown warm air.
- Add more rugs
Rugs insulate your floor from cold rising from the ground. Lay out thicker rugs or add layers to your floor to keep your floor insulated.
- Foil up your radiator
If you're using a radiator, wrap its back with aluminum foil to reflect heat toward the room rather than letting it disperse into the walls.
This winter, take control of your heating bills by applying these easy insulation methods to your home. The materials needed cost less than $30 and save you much more in the long term. For other solutions, give us a call at 301-663-0300.
